I have a CDI furler on my Hunter 240. The webbing loop at the head of my jib rotted through, and I am left with the shackle on the halyard at the top of the furler foil....about 25 feet off the deck. How can I easily get this halyard down?

Thanks,
Herb

Tip it on its side

If you have access to a dock, you could put a couple of big guys on the side closest to the dock and try pulling the mast down to the dock with the jib and/or the main halyard. Close the hatch in case, but you shouldn't get any water inside.

Drop the mast

The easiest way to do it is just drop the mast. Even if you go up in a bosun's chair, you won't have the leverage you need to get the CDI's halyard down.

If there is any kind of loop that you could get a boat hook through, you could pull it down that way, too. I would not recommend trying to tip the boat over.

I agree lowering the mast seems the simplest way to fix this problem. I've raised and lowered the mast on my boat on the water many times, it only takes a few minutes and you'd spend a lot more time trying to fix the problem any other way.

If Your Up For a Challange

A piece of PVC pipe with a hook in it. Support the end with the main halyard. In the end lowering the mast is probably simpler a quicker. You can leave the boom attached for a quick up and down. I used the main halyard to raise it up and support it during the evolution. Do NOT forget the raising and lowering stays I did once doing a qick up and down and it was not pretty.
