I'm looking into putting a CDI furler on my Hunter 23, has anyone mounted one in the anchor locker? I know it can be done with a little custom work to the locker doors to accommodate the luff. It looks like it could be a slick set-up, if done right. I’m not crazy about the look of the furler drum sitting 6-8 inches off the deck to clear the locker doors. Any opinion Pros or Cons would be appreciated.

what about the anchor?

Just wondering where you are going to store the hook so that its handy when you need it...

You leave the anchor in the locker

You leave the anchor in the locker as always. The furler is way up in the very peak of the locker. The drum is only 5 inches around, it mounts right where your forstay mounts. You do need to be a more little careful when you put the anchor back in and not just throw it and hit the drum.

Location of furler line to drum

You might want to consider how the drum line gets from the drum to the cockpit. If I remember the CDI unit recommends the line being perpendicular to the forestay. This might be difficult down in the anchor well.

Turning block

A previous owner installed the furler in the anchor locker, sending the furling line forward (and up) into a turning block, then aft to the cockpit. Made new anchor locker doors out of wood, might be teak, I wouldn't know. But I do think it looks pretty sharp. Mac

I cut my anchor locker doors last night

After talking to the people at CDI, I went ahead and cut my doors last night. They said that when the H23 came out they went down to the Hunter factory to work on the feasibility of installing their furlers in the locker. They said that the top of the spindle or bottom of the luff is 1&5/8 inches in diameter, so a hole of just two inches would work. That sounded a little too tight so I went with a circle of 3 inches just to be sure. Now this weekend I'm going to fiberglass a new lip on the doors to give it the strengh I lost cutting the old lip of the original rectangular opening off.

Picture of another set of modified doors

Here's a set of anchor locker doors that have been modified to put the furler in the anchor locker. These have the same shape as the wooden doors on Mac's boat. Looks to me like they went too far, not crazy about having a big gapping hole on the bow. The workmanship is nice the way they reglassed a lip back on from the cut off piece.

nice cut...

John, this looks like a great upgrade without sacrificing aesthetics. Let us know how it works out...I'm interested to see the finished product. Brian h23 Kickin' Back

Pictures of new lips glassed on

Fabricated the new lips and glassed them on this weekend. This added an unbelievable amount of strength to the anchor locker doors, even more than stock. Still needs to be sanded and maybe a little more filling here and there, then final sand and paint.
