cd player options

Has anyone found either: -a good AC-powered CD player that goes in the cabin that can be used underway without major skipping? -a way to mount and rewire (DC-wise and to the cockpit speakers) a cockpit-located CD player that could be used while underway (the marinized units seem to have anti-skip features that the AC powered units don't ahve)I'm getting a lot of skipping from the unit that's mounted above the nav table area. Sound is great while docked but underway it's FM radio-only at this point.

Alt CD idea

I have installed a automobile AM/FM/CD that works fine. It has only been in for a few months, but no sign of problems. The worst potential problem is that it was designed to drive a 4/8 Ohm system and has 4 ea 8 Ohm speakers on each side all wired in parallel. This results in a 2 Ohm system. Blaupunt said, don't wire the front and rear outputs together, just drive it with one output. Someday when I run short of things to do, I will split the speakers up to front and rear.As for corrosion, above the chart table should be reasonably dry and it runs warm enough to keep it dry. Even if it does fail, a replacement will fit back into the same hole.

Cheapo solution

John:I went cheapo on this. I bought a portable Awai(sp?) unit with an anti-skip mode. This unit came from QVC (shopping channel). The unit comes with an adapter that slips into the cassette in our onboard stereo. It has the option to run on batteries, DC (cig lighter adapter) and AC adapter. It also has ear phones. This was all under $100. We have it mounted near the chart table on one of those Radio Shack car mounts with velcro. I found this as a suitable alternative to purchasing a new radio.

Real Cheap

I did not want to spend a fortune to replace my tape player and bought a Sony boom box with digital tuning and a remote control for around $50.00 from Best Buy. Downside it only holds one CD. Upside is that has its own battery supply (AC?DC) and can be moved around. I suspend it the main hatch facing the cockpit with some shock cords and although it bounces like crazy it never skips. I suppose I would go a different route if I had a mega battery system but I try and keep as low tech as possible.
