I love my 2000 Hunter 270 and am at a point of adding a stereo systen. Where is the best place to mount an am/fm cd stereo and two flushmount speakers? I am a real newbie when it comes to adding electronics. Hunter 260 suggestions are welcome as well.

speakers

I installed two flush mount speakers in the cockpit bulhead last year. The sound is great and installation was fairly simple. I would assume your 270 is not that different from the 260. The automotive type radio/CD player is in a case mounted on the ceiling over the sink. I used an automotive type whip antena shoved inbetween the liner and the cabin top. The reception is quite adequate and no external antenna to worry about. The plastic case looks like it was made for an under dash installation.

CD Installation hints

The best location in the cabin to mount a CD player is on the forward bulkhead. This should allow you to use the remote from the cockpit as well as the salon. I believe it would be possible to mount your flush speakers in the aft port and starboard cockpit lockers facing forward. The speaker wires and 12V power can be fished along the port side. I would also mount a second pair of speakers (bookshelf type) in the salon. I would wire these either as rear speakers or to an AB switch. Your greatest challenge will be running the speaker wires and adding the 12V power wiring from your distribution panel to the CD. Be prepared to fish the wires through some pretty tight spots. It will be at least a day long project and will require some tools like an electrician's fish tape, wire strippers, dremel tool, hole saw, and soldering iron.

Remote doesn't work from cockpit

I just installed a double din stereo in the forward bulkhead as well, the idea being to use the remote control from the cockpit. The remote does not work that far away, at least on mine, it does not have anywhere near the range of a home remote, and I guess it makes sense why, its for a car. But the installation still came out well, I just have to run downstairs to use the remote.

speakers

The previous owner of my H26 placed cabin speakers in the locker under the seats on the port and starboard side. The cockpit speakers are the box type mounted under the stern rail seats. It has worked out nice. The CD/radio is under the electric panel on the starboard side, but I think it would be easier to access under the bridge deck between the steps and the wall to the head. I hope this helps.

Thanks

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Jerry, are you at Lighthouse Landing or Green Turtle Bay?

Less than a good investment

.. from the archives: While it is true that some more modern speakers have improved in longevity, I've never been satisfied with how well they hold up in cold, heat, sun, salt, constant moisture and wind pressure. Being both a musician and a sailor I will attest that everything acting on an cockpit speaker constitutes the perfect recipe for rapid speaker-cone failure. We solved this issue at Cherubini after my brother built a pair of speaker boxes for our Raider 33. They each housed a 6x9 car speaker, surface-loaded as to facilitate replacement. The boxes were made of 1/2" white-overlay plywood and fitted with square rubber feet at the corners and plain Herreshoff yacht cleats on the top which functioned as handles as well as where to wrap up the cord. RCA phono jacks were fitted inside the cockpit-seat lockers so that the connecting cables could be led out through the lift handles/ hatch scuppers. When needed, the boxes were dug out of the lockers, hooked up, and stood on the cabintop, cockpit seat, wherever. With metal aluminium grilles they took an incredible beating in the locker and getting kicked around the deck. They were cheap and easy to build, repair, or replace-- certainly WAY cheaper than the incredible prices some makers charge for what they call 'seaworthy' speakers-- parts only, exclusive of cutting holes in your fibreglass deck. Think about it. JC 2

Speaker placement

You might want to think about where you place speakers if you flush mount them in th cockpit. If you sail in any kind of weather, a speaker in the wrong place serves as a great entry point for water into the hull. Would you cut a hole in your cockpit and simply cover it with paper, or at best a thin sheet of plastic? We have speakers on brackets attached to the v-berth bulkhead. Can rock and roll just fine in the cockpit. And no cockpit penetrations.
