tanzer 22 lake george
I am looking at 2 boats, both 70's vintage and both in good shape. the cc24 has been restored and improved with fiberglass bulkheads and the tanzer 22 isin good shape-dry inside. the cc24 is about twice as much as the tanzer. the boat would be on lake george, used mostly for day sailing, solo sailing, etc. I like the size of the tanzer cockpit.does anyone have experiences with these boats they could relate? thanks.

I race against a couple of Tanzer 22s and they are very nice sailing boats. They can be very fast and sail well to their rating. C&Cs are not too shabby either but I don't know anything about them.

my choice would likely be....

the tanzer 22. I had one that I sold this summer when I bought my new hunter. I got it (TAKAPI) 4 years ago. I sailed it on lake CHAMPLAIN back east before bringing her to vancouver B.C. where I sailed her in the pacific ocean.

Obviuosly more of a lake boat then open water but performed extremely well in ocean conditions.

She was easy to sell, super fast and hard to find a cockpit with has much room. If the price is half the CC and it is in good shape. I would not even blink and get another tanzer as I missed my first one...

Never have sailed a Tanzer 22

But I have the Tanzer 26. Not a bad sailing boat, I have a friend that has one and he has actually sailed his outside up the east coast from Deltaville up to New England.

The C&C has a good reputation as well, it would be a tough choice for me to make, I would have to look really hard at all the factors involved.

Rigging, sail inventory, etc. I guess I would sail them both and see which one I liked the best. Considering that the C&C you say is twice as much, I would lean toward the Tanzer since it is also a very good boat.

The Tanzer 22 has quite a following and seems to be a decent performer. Lake George has quite a J24 following, so obviously you have the depth for a keel boat, but are you prepared for the added expense of a keel boat versus something you can haul / launch yourself? What will you do with the boat in the winter?

Regarding the C&C 24, it is definitely more of a performance boat. She has a very open interior, from what I see, and that may be a problem in that there is little privacy using the porta-potti.

I owned and sailed a 1976 C&C 24 (Niagra model) for many years. See pic below. I sailed and raced that little boat all over the Chesapeake Bay, in all kinds of wind and wave conditions. I just loved that little boat. It had great light and medium wind performance on all points of sail. While I sailed in some stiff conditions now and then, it is definitely not a heavy weather boat. This boat had some neglectful owners after I sold it, but I'm happy to report it is back in its native Ontario and has been totally rebuilt by its current loving owner. I can put you in touch with him if you like.

I don't know how the C&C 24 compares to the Tanzer 22, but I just loved the one I owned and would recommend this boat to anyone.

Comparison vs. Need

If all you are planning is day sailing, the tanzer 22 at half the price is a no brainer! It is a great sailing boat, I have a friend that had one and it was a great boat. If overnighting is a consideration, more issues here. If you are going to race, then you have to decide if you want to race in local one designs vs. a competitive PHRF boat.
