Are there any known (reliable) alternatives to marine caulking (3M 5200). Does marine caulking have "Special" characteristics that aren't available in other high quality silicone sealants? I have noticed that my marine supplier sells 5200 for $11.00 (canadian)for the little tube. I can get a large tube of GE II Silicone, caulking gun, and a double burger with cheese for about the same price at Home Depot. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Scott III Short Toronto

Caulk

Scott, what are you caulking, sealing or attaching? It makes a difference as to whether you want a polysulfide, silicone or polyurethane.

stern lazarette

Actually I am sealing a leak in the starboard stern lazarette. The entire unit is removable (allowing for the instalation of a genset I imagine). My boat is still under warranty, however, with the service we get up here, I may have to wait until next year until they fix it so I decided to do it myself.

Sounds like a job for fiberglass repair.

Scott: This sounds like it may be a case where a fiberglass repair would be more in order. I would contact Hunter and explain the circumtances. If it is removeable, maybe they will ship you another one.

Try this.

There is almost no topic regarding sailboat maintenance that cannot be found, in depth, in the "Forum Archives". But if, like me, you do not have the time to search and read all of those items here is an alternative. Go to Sailnet and search on the topic. Usually you will find one or more articles that will answer your question. But I wish more people would post their solution here after they get their answer. See the "Related Link" for an example where the only search word was "polysulfide".
