Black caulk between teak pieces in cockpit is loose and needs to be replaced. Any one know what is best to use? Thanks Jeff @ lggprints@yahoo.com

Black silicone

I just used black silicone I picked up at Lowes. I only had a small corner that had seperated but was allowing dirt and water between the teak and fiberglass. I cleaned out the old caulk with a knife and stiff bristle brush, then recaulked it. Fairly easy to do, matches the old caulk and seems to be holding well.

We have this problem too

we have just about all the wood loose in one or the other corner so its a big operation.... glad to hear we can get it at lowes, it should work on bigger applications too right ? I'm doing the wood too but after all the plates are safely in place.

Teak caulk

Gaute, yes it should work for larger applications as well. Note that I did have to place a weight on the teak to keep it seated while the caulk dried. I used gallon bottles of water.

was it easy to keep it only in the crack

Excellent. now... I had a leak in my porthole on deck and I sealed that with white selant, that stuff if it got on anything was stuff and really hard to get off, if this the same way ? Does it shape easy with a tool like other caulk ? I was thinking about taping up the area around where it needs to go but not sure that will make a difference....

Use a small amount

I cut a smaller than normal hole in the end of the tube, applied it as cleanly as I could then used my finger to help smooth it out a bit more. I kept a rag handy to wipe my finger on frequently. I also tried to take the longest stroke I could with the tube of caulk. Remember a little goes a long way, so try to go with the least amount you can and work up from there.

Polyether Multi-Caulk Sealant

I used West Marine Polyether Multi-Caulk Sealant on my Beneteau 351 cockpit seats. If the teak pieces are loose, I pried up the teak, cleaned the wood and fiberglass, cleaned old caulk off the edges of each piece and reseated it with the caulk with proper spacing between each. If your teak is still seated well then just gouge our the old caulk. Then use blue tape to carefully cover the teak leaving the space between the pieces and around the edge. Then use your calking gun to run a bead around all the spaces. You can use a rubber gloved finger to smooth and remove excess caulk. Last trick is to CAREFULLY remove the tape after an hour or so BEFORE the caulk dries.
