Right now I think anything you use will be a temp fix. You can stop the leaks for now with wax, from a toilet ring, then wait until spring to remove the parts and rebed them properly. I would not try a permanent repair until you get 50+ weather for a 24 hour period. I tarped my 25 O'Day last year and took everything off so that when the weather permited I could start work. I got no water all winter. r.w.landau

Wait for spring

You will indeed have a problem with most materials setting up in the winter. You can remove the fittings and get ready to rebed come spring but you need to wait until then to do it. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

If you are going to use caulk, wait.

Ted: I would have to agree. If you are going to use caulking you probably need to wait for warmer weather. Another option is to use Butyl Tape. It is something that everyone should look at to prevent persistant leaks. UV resistant, does not crack and stays pliable in sub zero temps. I really don't know why butyl is not promoted more in the marine industry. Probably more expensive than caulk. The difference is that you only do it once.

cold weather caulk

thanks for your replies. re the tarp, i have always used a 6x8' tied across the hatchway and over the centre of the deck. has always workedwell. if time before weather gets bad have also cleaned and waxed the deck before storage to protect from the winter weather. in case not time, always wax decks twice in spring with 2 good coats of canned heavy wax as with hull. first winter keeping her in water with bubble jet. looking forward to a good two days early in the year to have her hauled out and made ready for some good early sailing. tired of waiting all winter anticipating thespring launch being earlier every year - does that happen -noooooooooo - no matter how much one tries!! maybe if weather like last two years, we may be able to enjoy some excellent sailing febuary/march. ted. in-two-deep 26.5 hunter
