We have had Catalina's since the mid 70's. However, the 42 Hunter Passage 420 CC has a great layout for a couple who likes to spend weekends on the boat. If you had a choice between a $125K 42 Hunter or Catalina 42, which would you buy? I like them both. My mate likes the aft cabin.

Buy What You Like

You and your "Mate" will be the ones spending time on it, get what the two of you prefer and agree on then enjoy. Both will have their pros & cons. Gather all the information on them you can; make a comparison and don't let others influence you.

Which one to Choose?

I too have put both of those boats on my list. I originally wanted the Passage. I loved the aft cabin and the bathroom. But the tub isn't very pratical. The layout is nice. There are other differences too. The passage is a center cockpit model. Getting to things and sailing will be different. I think the creature comforts of the Hunter are nicer but the equipment might be better on the Catalina. I like the Catalina 42 centerline berth. I have spoken to many people who have the walk out transomes and the aft berth and they have said that the water slapping is noisey. You do not get that noise in the forward berth. I was at the Annapolis Boat show in Oct. and compared the 2 new models. In the new model, I think the Catalina 42 had more storage space. If you can charter one of the models that would be best to try it out. I know there are several places that have these models for charter. Good luck.
