Im trying to answer a question for my friend. He says he has a catalina 25 tall rig.. Is there a difference in mast height? Or is just a longer sail? The problem he's having i when the sail is raised all the way up, the boom hangs down quite low. Any help?? Fred

What is a tall rig?
The mast height of a tall rig is by definition taller/has greater length than a standard rig. A tall rig may have a larger cross section and may have more or heavier shrouds, may have an additional spreader, etc. You could use a standard size sail with a tall rig. You most likely cannot use a sail for a tail rig on a standard length rig. The mainsail could be reefed to accomodate the shorter length. A tall rig jib, without a furling system, would most likely not be possible to use. It would seem that your friend has a standard length rig and is trying to use a tall rig mainsail with it!

Are we talking about the original Catalina 25 or the Ctalina 250? In the case of the Catalina 25, the tall rig had a two foot longer mast, 30 ft vs the standard's 28 feet. But don't forget that the tall rig had the boom riding a foot lower, that's how I can spot them. So the mainsail luff is three feet longer on the tall rig. This equated to about 20 sq ft more sail area for the tall rig. 295 sq ft vs 270 I think. Depending on how tall you are, most people can safely stand in the cockpit of a Standard 25, but with the tall rig, you better sit down or duck! I sure hope the question was not about a C250
