Catalina Racing Machine?

Today I was day sailing in Havre de Grace harbor and saw a beautiful boat and on the sail was the red triangle with the "C" in it that all Catalina sails have as the symbol for the boat. In this case it was a "C" with "37" under the "C" and the boat looked to be about 37 ft. The odd thing about it was the sail was a high tech laminated job, the mast was extremely tall, the boat was an all out racing machine, with flush deck, low freeboard, fine entry, huge wheel and very serious, oversized deck hardware. It looked like an America's Cup boat except for it's length. Did Catalina ever make such a thing or is there some other boat make out there that uses the "C" in a red diamond for it's class symbol?

What you are describing sounds like the Catalina Capri 37. Check out the boat info on this site for that model. Not too much info but a picture that matches you descripion.

Cat 37

Yes, what Mike said. They were originally made for the Congressional Cup out of Long Beach. They were made as a purpose built match racing machine to replace the fleet of borrowed and inevitably aging Cat 38s that had been used until the 37s came along. I don't know if Long Beach Yacht Club actually purchased them, or they were donated by Catalina or whatever. I'm sure there are folks more knowledgeable than I am on the details.
