Ok, Does anyone know what the original composition of metals is for the through-hull fittings for a Catalina 27. It appears that the water intake and overboard discharge through-hulls on the starboard side are bronze and that there is a brass nipple at the port side for refrigerator and sink discharge. Any background information would be helpful. Thanks, -Andrew

Catalina original through hulls

Just finished replacing my thruhulls on my 83 Catalina 30 last weekend. The original thru hulls were brass pipe flush on the outside and glassed on the inside into what some call volcanos. Everyone says they are dangerous and you should replace them with real thru hulls. Check the archives on how to replace.

Did it yourself?

Does a Cat 30, 1989 have similar thur hulls ? Did you replace them yourself ? What kind of replacements did you use, where did you purchase them, and finally how much did the job coast ? Thanks, CM

If on the outside of the hull the thru hull is flush (at least on on old Catalinas) it is just the brass glassed in volcano. I think on your 89 Cat 30 they may have corrected the problem. I went with bronze thru hulls and bronze ball valves as the plastic ball valves have tended to bind even if I lubed them.

Thru Hulls

CM As John said, your 89 probably has plastic thru hulls with 'GRP' ball valves. If you want to replace the ball valves with bronze you will also need to change the thru hulls to bronze (the threads are not exactly the same). On my 93 I had to replace all of the GRP ball valves because they started getting sticky, and a couple of the handles broke off. The new valves, all were replace by 1997, have had no problems.
