I am looking to buy a used 36 - 42 ft catalina. What are the key maintenance/repair issues I should look for. Each manufacturer has their weak points - which ones does Catalina have?

Catalina Maintenance/Repair Issues

I have owned my '93 C36 for 8 years (we are the second owners) and other than the normal upkeep, washing, waxing, minor fiberglass repairs, teak work, a new impeller every year etc., over that period I have replaced the batteries once (I now have gels), replace all of my marlon thru-hulls with brass thru-hulls (my choice), replaced all hoses and double clamped them, replaced bilge and shower pumps, replaced hot water heater (I now have a ss one), replaced air-conditioning system and added a second in the aft cabin, and replaced the VHF with a RAM system. On the outside, I have replaced all canvas, cockpit cushions, running rigging, and twice had a few blisters repaired on the hull. And that's about it.

Mast step block

Some boats (mine included) have had a problems with decay of the wood block used between the keel and base of the mast. This block is in the bilge below the fiberglass floor. As it rots, the rigging tension causes the mast to push the floor down. This seperates the bulkhead from the deck. I don't know of anyone who had irrepairable harm but it takes some work to fix.
