I have a 1986 Cataline 22 I purchased used several years ago. I noticed the storage compartment under the seat was always damp after sailing. Last weekend while sailing we healed about 25 - 30 deg. After sailing I noticed about 1 qt of water in the compartment. It seems to be comming in whenever we heal since it never has any water while docked. Has anyone had this problem? Where could the water be comming from and how do I fix it? The water was not over the gunwale while sailing.

Hi You didn't say which seat had the leak. There are several places that could be where the leak comes in. 1) the lower gudgeon of the tiller. 2) The seam between the deck and the hull, just under the bumper strip. 3) on some of the catalinas, if the forstay was too tight it would lift the deck at the bow causing a leak. I have had the seam between the hull and the deck leak at times, I sealed it with silicone rubber all around the gap just under the deck lip and the hull. I have a Catalina 1970 #81 I hope that this gives you some guide lines for your leak. Fair Winds AL

C22s can leak at the lower gudgeon. The gudgeons are what the rudder attaches to. There is an upper and a lower. Under sail, or motor, the stern of the boat can be submerged at the lower gudgeon. The solution is to make a rubber gasket the size of the gudgeon bracket, poke two holes for the bolts, and then re-attach with a dab of caulk for the bolt heads. My C22 leaked underway, but not at the dock, and this fixed it.

Thanks so much for your advice. The dealer was no help to me. The storage under the seat is the front left seat just behind the sink. I didn't realize that a leak at the gudgeon could show up so far forward. I will check all of the suggested location.

That sounds like the compartment where the keel lock bolt is if it's under the forward port side dinette seat. The "lock" bolt is under there and can leak around the threads. The handbook says to use a waterproof grease on the threads to seal it. Most feel that the "lock" bolt really can't do much but put a groove in your swing keel. Many just remove the "lock" bolt and fill the hole with glass. If it isn't the "lock" bolt leaking it could be a crack in the keel trunk caused by the keel flopping around on a worn pivot pin. It makes a clunking sound. Don't panic, it doesn't take much wear to make that sound and probably isn't the proplem......but it has happened to some. Hope it's just the bolt leaking.....good luck!
