Assuming an appropriate weather window, would Catalina be too far offshore to take a C22? It's 22 miles offshore, but I know lots of smaller boats go out there. Has anyone here done it? Scot

Not if it's a swing keel model
I had one and sailed between the Cape and Martha's Vineyard about 14 miles distance but with the swing keel it was no fun - if you get into anykind of weather you could bust up the keel trunk with it bouncing up and down - and no the keel hold down bolt doesn't stop it from doing that. Dave

Hi There, In response to your question, yes it can be done and is done all the time, depending on the time of year! I did it in a MacGregor 22' about 10 years ago. It too had a swing keel, but not the stability or quality of a Catalina. The trip over was fine, coming back we had a squall come out of nowhere and suddenly we had 10-12 seas for about an hour with the wind at our stern. I lived to tell the story but if I had my choice I would have wanted to be in a more stable yacht. I believe the Cat 22 is stable enough, swing keel or not, sailing ability in all weather conditions is a factor and using your head as to what time of year to go I believe is another. SO in short to answer your question, yes you can, but be prepared for the worst! Happy Sailing,
