Catalina furling jib on a Hunter

We're considering adding a furling jib to our Hunter 25.5 (CDI FF4). Rather than purchasing a furling jib, it appears that a 150 furling jib for a Catalina 25 might work. Luff seems like is about a foot short, but the rest of the dimensions look OK. Would this be a better alternative to modifying our existing sails. The quote to modify our existing 150 (from SailCare) is about the same as a new Catalina 25 150 furling jib (from Cruising Direct). We're in a mostly light air area, rarely get much wind over 15k. Any thoughts? TIA, Bill

Furling Sail

Bill, The dimmesions on the Cat 25 135% furling genoa will work, although you will have to extend your genoa tracks to sheet the sail inboard. The Cat 25 150% is too long except for sheeting on the toe rail. The CD prices are good, but check to see if they include a UV cover and leech line. Also, ask if they are double-stitched. If any of the answers are "no", go to sailnet.com, click the link to AirForce Sails and get an online quote for a 130% or 150% sail made for the 25.5. Good Luck! Dave H25.5 "Last Resort"

Bill - shall we move this one?

Hi Bill - this could be an interesting question to pose to the guys at Doyle. If you'd like me to move the thread just let me know. ph.

Bill, 150% may be to large for 25.5

If you are running the 25.5 stock jib track, any sail with a foot over 13ft will not sheet properly. I run a 133% with a 9.5ft J on my 25.5. That is the max sail I could get and still get the proper jib sheeting angle. Ted

Let's move the thread (Phil)

There may be interest in trying to find sails that would work in different model boats. I'd like to hear what designers would have to say.

Luff length (Ted)

What furler do you have and what is the length of the luff on your 133? TIA, Bill

6" to long

The J on the 25.5 is 10' the J on the Catalina is 10' 6". Is the sail from a tall rig Catlina 25? The I measurement for a standard rig Cat 25 is 29' and on a Hunter 25.5 the I is 30'. So for a standard rig the 150 is 1' short on the I measurement and 6" to long on the J measurement. But the sail can be recut to fit. But a new 155 made for the Hunter 25.5 will fit. The foot length for a 150 made for the 25.5. would be 15 feet. While the Cat 150 would be around 15'9". We had a 25.5 and raced the boat with a 155 and it is the best boat in the 25 foot range. Might have been our favorite boat to date. Cliff H 28.5 ""Red Dog" Cliff

Convert my hank on jib

I'm going to convert my hank on 150 to roller furling. Its in good shape. Seems like the best way to go.

Foot Size

Bill, The foot size depends both on the track length (has your's been extended or will it be?) and on the height of the sail's clew. My furling genoa (130%) has a 13'-0" foot with the clew a little more than a foot off the deck when sheeted tight. Before extending the tracks this sail used almost all of the track. With a low clew, you could probably add 6" to the sail but you would have to measure your boat. With the tracks extended all the way to the front of the cockpit coaming I can sheet my #1 sail with a foot of 15'-3" but the clew is lower and I use the entire track. My max luff with a halyard restrainer installed is 31'-7" to the tack hooks. From that you need to subtract the length of the furling unit. In most cases you should get a little more than 30' for a furling sail, but each boat should be measured. Dave Weir H25.5 "Last Resort"
