Catalina 470 at 210 feet down

Does anyone want to go for a sail? A Catalina 470 sunk in 210 feet of water, wing keel. The boat is standing straight up, with the wing in the sand, and the main sail flowing in the current. Recovery would make a great 5 part mini series.

What a terrible shame....beautiful boats like that should not come to such an end...

Anchoring with rode that’s too short. Just as bad as a bungee jumping with a chord that’s too long.

Good observations. Fresh water, and 210 quite cold water. Anchor went down to try and hold the boat in place. Owner of the boat and wife and black lab. Late August at 9:30 at night. 12+ miles from shore. 30-35 MPH wind on the nose, with 6-8 ft rollers. Mrs went below and found water to her knees. Turned to Port and called a MAYDAY. 1 hour to respond, and the cabin was full. Both owners and dog were fine. Main was still up when they were taken off and heading to shore.

Since these pics were probably taken for insurance purposes soon after the sinking, or by someone interested in salvaging the vessel, what can you tell us about actions taken since 2007? Is there a related news story? Is the boat still there or has it become an artificial fishing reef.

Meh. Boats are like cars. They live, they die. They drive, they crash. They sail, they sink. It happens. It’s not like it’s a work of art, or something else irreplaceable.

I like cars plenty, but boats speak to us. We 'feel' them and become one with them. We even call them 'she.' So it hits us and hurts us because we can project our own possible sadness when we hear a lovely lady has drowned. Even if it is a common commodity Catalina.

210' is not a terrible lift. As intact as it is, I am surprised it was not recovered.

Who is God's name would want a 50 foot sailboat that sank in 200 feet of salt water?? The pressure would have pressed water into everything. The corrosion would be everywhere.

While nothing was said about salt water, one would have to make that resumption for a couple of reasons, first there is white sand, secondly, at 210' there would be little to no light in freshwater.

Yes it is a fresh water sinking, and it was not recovered by the Insurance Carrier, back in 2007. The cost back then was prohibitive. We have been advised it could be very cost effective to do it now. That is natural light, fresh water with a camera on the ROV. The whole story behind the journey and sinking/MAYDAY and rescue along with the recovery could make a great mini series. A agent from the Discovery Channel has asked for more details. Catalina was very interested in why this 3 year old 470 went down.
