I recently purchased from Catalina a custom-made small roller to mount under the chain wildcat on my C42 windlass. (It looks like a bow anchor roller for a very small boat.) The instructions are to move the chain stripper from the "6 o'clock" position to the "9 o'clock" position, and then mount the roller right beneath the wildcat with the chain going over the top of the roller. I have not installed it yet and I would like feedback from anyone who has used this system. The installation drawing is badly out of scale, showing much more room under the winch than actually exists. Does the system work? Is it a problem when transitioning from the nylon anchor line on the drum to the chain on the wildcat? Any suggestions?

I have not heard of that one before. I had a 1992 C42 and anchoring was always a pain in the a....ss. I contacted Gerry Douglas and he sent me a starboard wedge to place under the windlass to give more angle so the chain would slide into the anchor well instead of piling up under the windlass. I sold the boat before I had a chance to install it, so I don't know how it would of worked. I always found it difficult to make the transition from rode to chain, not to mention the jams when the chain wrapped around the gypsy when you weren't paying close enough attention. If you find that that system does work, I would go with a all chain rode and not have to worry about the transition from 3 strand to chain. My opinion.

I have a 1992 with the horizontal windlass. It did not work well at all. I was convinced that if I hadn't fixed it, it would only be a matter of time before I lost fingers screwing around with it. I dealt with it by going to an all chain rode and cutting a hole in the chain locker directly below where the chain falls off the winch. The chain now drops all the way to the bottom of the bow and never jams. I also put in a reversing solonoid and a deck wash. It works great with the only downside being that the anchor chain is now stored inside the boat and you have to be diligent about squirting the muck off the chain. But you can work the windlass with your toe, the squirter with one hand, and still have one hand left for a beer to keep you company while you squirt.
