Depends on what you percieve is adequate
performance. If you are a pure racer and only sail light sailboats you might think its ok, but by no means terrible. It really depends on how loaded a boat you have and even what condition the bottom is in. Its amazing what a smooth bottom will do for you in light airI have a C36MKII (totally loaded down !) standard rig/wing keel 135 genny (theoretically slowest of all C36 config's for light air) & sail in Western LI Sound which can be known for very light winds in summer (almost as bad as Chesapeake) . I will confess that I get a bit frustrated when I see some lightweight j-boat in sub 5kt winds especially downwind (up wind my speed and boat speed is additive and I can still get some good speed). For that reason I got an Asyemmetrical Spinnaker thats easy to fly and does wonders for those few times when I'm running downwind in light air On the plus side of our boats I rarely ever have to reef any sail all the way up to 20+kts of wind and I feel very comfortable and can sail solo and not feel overwhelmed. Don't think I could say that in the lightweight boats
