Can anyone tell me if the rudder has to be dropped to remove or re-install the prop shaft on a Catalina 36 Mkii?

Any help would be great. Thanks

No, you can remove the engine and get it out that way.

Seriously, I think it's the same for Mk. I or Mk. II, and you need either drop the rudder of pull the engine.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have read various accounts and think I'm going to have to figure it out for myself, unless of course anyone has done one.

I had my prop shaft replaced this past spring. The bronze shaft was cut for removal. New ss shaft was inserted quite easily without the cutlass bearing in place. However, the shaft won't go with the bearing in place. cutlass bearing was inserted after shaft was in place using the previious bearing to tap new one in place. My boat is a 1993 C36 wing keel with elliptical rudder (not sure if new style rudder would make a difference). So, there should be no need to drop the rudder or to remove the engine. Cheers

Oops.....in prior post, I meant to say 'not sure if old style rudder would make a difference'.

It does not. With cutlass in-place you will need to drop the rudder or risk bending the shaft. With the cutlass pressed out you can usually squeak it by. Dropping the rudder is easy but you need the boat blocked high enough or a hole dug under the rudder...

Thank you all, hopefully the shaft will be in early this week and we can get it installed and the boat back in the water.

We installed the shaft today. We had the trans and the stuffing box out and we had about a 1/4" clearance to get it in. I went pass the strut up to the rear of the engine to clear the strut then back into it. Just happy I did not have to drop the rudder this go around.
