I am considering the purchase of a Catalina 34, 1990, shoal draft. I am interested to know the good, and bad points of this boat? This boat has the walk thru transom. If there is a former owner out there, please advise? Thank you, Tony

Chartered a C-34 once and liked it

Tony, I chartered a C-34 in San Diego for a week and found it to be a nice boat. The layout is nice and the boat handles pretty good. I found that in a blow, this one had a tendency to round up, but once reefed it sailed nice and flat. I ended up buying a C-36, but I think that was basically both are hard to find and that was the first one to come up for sale in my price range. I also have 4 kids and the larger aft cabin and salon in the 36 is more beneficial for me. I think my only criticism is that the space between the cockpit seats and the wheel can be a little tight. other than that, I thought it was a good boat. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh 86 C-36 #560

Cat 34

My best friend has had a Catalina 34 for four years and I sail if often. It's a great boat. The only serious problem we encountered was an electrical fire caused by a foulty wire harness between the engine (starter motor) and the cockpit control panel (start switch). I believe all Catalinas built before 1997 have the defectuve wire harness which can be replaced in a few hours. The replacement harness is available from Catalina's OEM supplier. I can't recall their name but the folks at Catalina could tell you.
