I am leaning towards kinda being a bit miffed by the 309. Catalina moves the 310 from the "Crusier" Catergory to "Island" series on the website-are our boats somewhat inferior now? and then introduces the 309 with the same LOA and LWL at LESS money than the 310-what gives are our boats going to be worth less now?

no matter what you buy in america, don't you expect them to proclaim what garbage they made this year when the calendar changes and they have next year's wonders to sell?

Devil's advocate

Oh My God!!!

They seem to have caught that dreaded Hunter disease of not sticking with a model and improving it, just come out with a new number!!! I feel your pain and they should be ashamed.

huh? i have a 1991 catalina 30, number 5961, which was launched in the seventeenth year of that model's production. from other earlier catalina 30's i know of many distinct improvements and they didn't stop in '91. is that not a record to be proud of?

C30 Replacement?

I don’t see any problem with the C309 at all. It appears to me to be the same hull as the C310, with a different and more traditional interior. It also seems to have a little less displacement with a bit more sail area. The arbitrary category that Catalina chooses to put the C310 in means absolutely nothing. I think I would still buy the C310, given the choice. We can bet the C310 still has the best sleeping cabin in a boat this size, and the head compartment looks bigger as well. We also have a standard windlass, and 4 winches. The C309 has a slightly taller mast, and a 9”longer boom if you need more sail area. The refrigeration looks interesting with DC + AC, and a stainless interior, although I don’t think this is of any practical significance. The water, fuel, and holding tanks appear identical. I’m not clear on what they have done with the deck, and portlight arrangement. You can never tell how the actual boat will eventually turn out, but I’m surprised the aft port hull has no window as shown. You’d think they would want some light back in that rear cabin. It reminds me of the C320 aft cabin setup, which was the main reason we didn’t buy one of those (think cavelike). I still think the C309 is just an option for people who prefer a traditional interior layout. Quote from Catalina website " Much the same as the original Catalina 30, The NEW Catalina 309 promises to be a successful racer and cruiser for families." The rig change is a surprise, but I’ll wait to see more information when the boats are actually in production. And I wouldn't worry that the C310 is worth less now. This just gives Catalina two boats to sell from the same hull! BTW- I now know the maximum capacity of a C310. And there were two people below, and I was taking the picture. We went out on the lake as the race commitee boat, but don't ask me about the lifejackets :)

You guys got it ALL wrong ! *o

The C309 is not replacing the C310. The C309 is a replacement for the C30. If you note the C309 its a traditional interior like the C30 was. The C310 is not going away. It very different than the C30 or the C310 and very much a single couple boat with space laid out very differently. Take a look at the projected layout. http://www.hellieryachts.com/articles/C309spec.pdf The first 3 people that posted here doesn't have a leg to stand on with their posts. I will be fair and just assume that when they posted they didn't know a **thing** about what they were talking about. LOL ;D I find it laughable that anyone would actually be foolish enough to say that Catalina is guilty of not sticking with a model and improving it.....LMFAO ! They only made the venerable C30 for 30 + years ? They are up to hull # 6800 +++. The most popular 30 foot sail ever made ! Its even in the Sail America Hall of Fame. http://www.sailamerica.com/halloffame/catalina30.cfm You guys are killing me .....LOL

were did my post go phil?

Phil at 3:28 I posted the first reply to "sceptre sailor" as Follows:"309 not a 310 The new 309 looks like an updated 30 ie a Mark IV not at all like your inovative 310. I would say your 310's reputation is secure. Enjoy your 310 it is a beauty !! " I found the reply in my history file. BUT NOW IT IS NOT IN THE LIST - did I say something wrong or contrary to your rules? PS I agree with Tom S the 309 and 310 are completely different boats. Tom

As I said...

in my previous post title "C30 replacement(?)" It's an additional option for a different buyer than the C310. But I wouldn’t go so far as to say they are completely different boats. I'm betting the hulls are the same. As evidenced by the Catalina quote in my previous post, I think the C310 is still targeted towards the cruising couple as it always was, and the C309 is aimed a little more towards performance and family fun.

309/310, Just like cars, really

Car manufacturers do this all the time, same basic body, different models. It's the same hull for both, from what I understand--I'm still trying to find out if the cockpit layout will be the same. It's still not going to fit in any of the slips my marina has available for next year ... so I may as well wait for some good pictures of it before deciding either way... I don't think anyone with a 310 should feel inferior based on a new model grouping on a website. The 310 has been around for about 6 years now and the various 30's have been around for 30 years, and since the layouts appeal to different needs (I mean, the 30 was available when you picked a 310 to begin with) I don't see it affecting relative values at all. It's just going to take a while for us to figure out which the heck we need ... if anyone is going to the show in St. Petersburg next week, would you PLEEEEEEZ take a mess of pictures for me, to email or post? I don't visualize the space well from the line drawings. Susan

I might as well sound off too...

My wife and I are weekend cruisers primarily, and the cabin layout of the 310 suits us perfectly (forward stateroom etc.). When I want to race, I crew on my brother-in-law's C&C99. I am guessing with the introduction of the 309, that Catalina wants to go after more of a cruiser/racer market (H33, Beneteau, C&C99 etc.), and that is fine with me. We love our 310, and with all of the options and extra's that we have on the boat, we probably could have saved maybe $10,000.00, but would not have the cabin comfort. Boats are very individual, and I don't doubt that the 309 could be a big seller for Catalina, but I am very happy with the choice that we made.
