As I start my 64th trip around the Sun, the 25 lb plow and 75 ft of chain gets harder to retrieve! Has anyone installed a windless on a 30 with a design to share?

Fred: have a look under this site's "boat info" tab then "Catalina Boat Mods" then "Catalina 30" - I installed a lewmar pro series windlass a few years ago and it has performed well. The cat 30 anchor locker isn't as deep as it should be but it is easy to push over the chain pile every 30 or 40 ft.

Windlass on Bowsprit

Was this bowsprit part of the boat's original configuration or added later to accommodate the windlass? Did you need to add additional battery power or larger alternator to power the windlass? Thx.

No, I built the bowsprit specificaly for the windlass, I'm considering adding another roller furling with an assymetrical on the end of it. I used 6 ga wire and ran it back to the main battery bank under the nav table. So far I haven't noticed the drain on the batteries. I should mention, I'm using two Group 27's and the original Motorola alternator. The anchor is a 33 lb Bruce with 40 ft of 5/16's BBB chain, this setup has put the fun back into anchoring out.

try this?

i have the same problem. what i'm planning on trying this season is - mount a rope clutch on the mast and take the genoa halyard off the winch once it's set. with the winch being free, you can lead the rode to the winch and use it as a manual windlass. haven't tried it, but the logic seems to work and, except for the cost of the clutch, it's free.

imho, echo gulf, you may want to consider installing a bob stay at the underside of the forward edge of the bow sprit to counter the add'l load. just my two cents.

Re: Echo Gulf and Add'l roller furling

John3018, we're of the same mind there, if you look close at the photo's you'll see that the bow sprit is reinfoced with a 1/4" x 2" brass bracket that acts similar to a bob-stay. This bracket is securely bolted to the hull, the second rollerfurler will be anchored through the bowsprit and into the top end of the bracket. It is my oppinion that with such a short protrussion, this should adequately handle the load.
