Recently purchased my Catalina 30, 1990 but she had had the water heater removed. What is my best source for a replacement. The boat is completely plumbed. Should I upgrade my heat exchanger to a 3" at this time as well? Thank you, Charlie

Seaward Products

Seaward products made/makes the heaters. We have an '88 Catalina 30 w/ Seaward heater. They are very helpful if you'll give them a call. Find them on-line at seawardproducts.com

Water Heater

Seaward, or Force 10 make a 6 gallon heater. The boat probably came with a Seaward 6 gallon. The difference between the two brands is where the hoses from the engine attach. They are on opposite sides, so the hoses you currently have may not be long enough. The heat exchanger has nothing to do with the water heater. The engine heats the water (or 120v if you are on shore power), via a hose from the thermostat housing to the heater, and back to the 'fresh water' pump (not the 'raw water' pump).

Odd that a 1990 C30 doesn't already have a 3 inch HX

since that's what came with the M25XP engine. If you have an M25 engine, by all means go to the 3 inch HX, it's a very good enhancement. We did, cost was $270 about five years ago from a local Universal dealer, seapower, in Oakland, CA. I agree about the Seaward 6 gallon water heater, don't bother with the stainless steel model, get the galvanized one. Check out your hoses first and get the unit with the hose connections where you can get at them, and while you're at it, replace the hoses. See the link (includes pictures - scroll down) for the reasons why.
