Catalina 30 Trawler?

Happened to see this boat pulling into my marina. I went over and looked at it. The workmanship is amazing. The top is all fiberglass. There is an inside wheel located starboard behind the cabin bulkhead with a seat. He said he eventually is going to put a mast on it, but now, it is for fishing. Nice boat, but a little weird for me... heh heh. SS

Pretty thin skin for a guy with a skull and crossed bones avatar. Quite frankly the boat does look small, don't you think so? Hey, I believe you when you say it's a Catalina 30... but why does it look so small? Picture angle? What do think? ...

Bringing something unusual to folks' attention.... will always face the possibility of unusual comments... no reason to get upset and certainly uncool to flame someone for it.

same reason stu blasted me for often reminding questioners that catalina direct is a second-rate supplier using the catalina name; just maybe a questioner or two doesn't follow my posts as religiously as stu does.

Love it! You know because fuel is so friggin costly those wanting to do the great loop opt for diesel powered sailboats, but leave the masts down. This is a great idea for the "looper". Add a bow thruster and your on your way. Very sharp.

In one of the yards here there's a Bayfield 29 that somebody modified like that, but not nearly so well done. Pretty poorly in fact. And it's got twin screws. Don't know how they did that but it sure looks weird. Little tiny sailing rig looks like it came off a 20 footer. Overall it's a waste of what was a nice boat. Been sitting there for a few years ago I think it's abandoned.
The one in the posting here looks pretty nice, and if they put the rig back on it would make a nice inland cruiser. Sailboats with the rig down can get pretty nasty in heavier seas, so unless they've done something different to the keel it needs the rig for balance.

I used to think that creating a trawler out of a sailboat would be a good idea. At least until there was a discussion here on Sailnet about it. Unfortunately, you end up with a trawler with plenty of uncomfortable rolling. Not only does it suffer from the lack of a sail to steady it, the lack of the mast contributes to a quicker roll.

It would be interesting to know if he reduced the amount of ballast and whether that had a positive effect on roll.

If I enter or exit the channel leading from Lake Michigan to Muskegon Lake with my sails down, I'll find myself rolling a ridiculous amount, only to look over at a fisherman in his 19 foot bass boat, rock steady.

Maybe the trawler idea would work if you:
1. Add the pilothouse
2. Leave the mast on
3. Get rid of the boom
4. Keep the roller furling with a 135 genoa

If you need to get under bridges, get a real trawler.

Its interesting & I agree that it definitely looks like a Catalina 30 lines.
Now for the snarky comment: it would make for a seriously slow fishing boat,
& not very practical for fishing anywhere near shoal waters with a 5.' 3" draft.

As far as using a sail boat as a power boat for the great loop idea above, I witnessed a guy who took the mast & rigging off of a 20 foot sailboat a few years back. He mounted two outboard motors to the stern transom that were gas powered. Seemed insane. I can't think of a slower, more boring way to travel by water. Plus a 20 foot sailboat has a lame cabin barely big enough to sleep in. At least the C-30 has a cabin big enough to sleep in & is a useable, if limited live aboard. To each their own, I reckon.
