Catalina 30 Middle Bass Island, Oh.
I have a 1985 Catalina 30' and I need to replace the sheaves on the main sheet traveler. Just got off the phone with Guahuer as I thought I had their traveler but they said they did not put their travelers on the 30s until 1989. Anybody know what traveler I might have OR how to replace the sheaves?

Thanks in advance...

Do you have the curved traveler and which sheeves are we talking about?

I have the curved job that came on earlier models and the sheeves on the outboard sides of the car (ears for a lack of the proper term) are white and falling apart. I think they entire car ear assemblies could be replaced by a small block w becket. Mine still function so I am leaving them until I replace/ upgrade to a flat traveler.

If it is the curved one - is there any chance you could afford the upgrade to the 'beefier' Garhauer one? The timing would be right if you can....

It was a MASSIVE improvement when mine was done. We went from never bothering to adjust the traveler position to putting it back into proper use.

I'm sorry that my old one wasn't kept, or I could have sent all the parts your way....

I guess it is slightly curved. The top and bottom sheeves of both cars are breaking apart.
Might be time for a new system but I was just wondering if this can be fixed. Thanks for the response.

Did mine on the 27 traveler with sheaths from WM and screws with lock nuts. A friend did it after seeing mine.

Take a look at the Garhauer straight track traveler. The problem with the curved track traveler is it's loaded with friction because of the pulling motion on the car. As the car is pulled past center the load tends to tip the car and the load is on a couple of rubber rollers, which over time lose their consistency. My end blocks were in poor shape so I had Garhauer build me a triple set up. The first time I used it I didn't like the performance and I then did what I should have done in the first place -- I sold it and bought the straight track traveler and mounted it on the teak blocks -- they look more nautical!! With the straight track traveler the pulling motion is horizontal and all the ball bearing in the car stay in contact with the track. You can adjust your traveler with one finger. With the curved track,Ii had to put my foot on the cabin to adjust it.

The curved track traveler was poorly designed in the first place. It was designed to look nice and match the curve of the cabin top instead of what it was supposed to do.

+1 on the Garhauer. We have one on our C27 and it's far superior to the curved ones.

Thanks Don. Your advice sounds good. If I am going to fix it I might as well do it right. I wish I could fix something on this boat that doesn't cost $600 but oh well!

Rose8878: To reduce your cost you might consider selling the curved track. There is a market for them. You could go on the C30 national group website and indicate you have one for sale. I don't know why anyone would want it but they do. In addition to selling the traveler, I also sold a 150 jib. I used the $$ to go toward a 135 high cut but after a few sails I decided I didn't like it and sold that also and bought a 135 sweeper. My wife finally said "no more buying of sails!!"

The Garhauer traveler car slides so easily you could send it side to side with a flick of the finger. It comes with 1 shackle or 3 -- I bought the one with 3 because I felt it would spread the load better but you can easily get a way with only 1. Garhauer also sells a nice mainsheeet conversion kit to go with the traveler. My mainsheet blocks were falling apart due to age and sun damage. After the conversion it was a pleasure to work the traveler and mainsheet.
