C30 Survey Issues
Here's a couple of pointers I picked up in purchasing our '81 C30:* Check under the mast on deck for deck deflection. On many C30s the deck may compress up to 1/4" or so if the rig has been cranked down or there are problems below deck (see below). Absent any cracks in the deck or other issues this isn't a problem and shouldn't be a deal killer. The factory has a good sheet on making this repair.* Check the compression post, to include the wooden block it rests on in the bilge. Make sure that block is solid with no softness/rot. If it's not you'd need to either reinforce it with penetrating epoxy (which I've done) or replace it (which the factory has a spec sheet for). This is a more serious potential problem as it affects the integrity of the entire rig, so be sure to check it out.* I think by '85 the factory had begun using the upgraded chainplate/u-bolt deck attachments from the forward lower shrouds. Make sure they're the u-bolt type and secure. The old eyebolt version is a weak point in the rig. If not upgraded will need to be.* If wheel steering, check with steering and gear/throttle cables for signs of wear. Include looking at the full run of the steering cables from the wheel to the rudder post. Mine had worn linkages that failed (luckily at the dock) right after we got the boat. The surveyor didn't look at this at all. Those are the high points. A standard survey will hit most of the rest; depending on location you might want to get a separate rigging survey to go aloft and check mast attachments, etc. Good luck!Mike TurnerS/Y Amity
