I'm considering a 1983 Catalina 30, and recently noticed the spreaders are made of wood. Have not had a chance to ask the broker about it. Does anyone know if this is normal? Thanks for any help on this topic.

I replaced my wood spreaders on my 1983 Catalina 30 tall rig about 5 years ago. I recall there were two companies offering replacements. One required drilling the mast which I didn't want to do. The company I bought mine from were a direct replacement and all I had to do was CAREFULLY measure and drill the mounting holes on the new aluminum spreaders. Based on the condition of my old wood spreaders I didn't want the possibility of the mast coming down on someone, probably under the worst conditions.

Cat 30 Spreaders

We just took posession of a 1985 30 that has metal spreaders. The rigging company that is quoting me on work said that all mid-80 Catalina's came with wooden spreaders so this nust have been upgraded at some point. Have your surveyor check them out or get a rigging company to come and evalute the spreaders and the rest of the rigging.

We have a 1982 C-30 TR with wooden spreaders and have not had any issues. We remove them at least every two years and sand and revarnish the spreaders. The boat is sailed often and raced fairly hard. As long as the wood has been maintained and the moisture kept out you should be in good shape with the original wooden spreaders. TPL

Make sure you look at the top sides. I have a 1982 and when we bought we didn't look and they were rotted out. Instead of replacing them with one of the after market kits I went down and spent $50.00 on a piece of spruce and made new ones. I figured if they had lasted over 20 years this would work and it has.

There was a great link to a bunch of pictures that someone had taken of the spreader replacement. Was it you Lance? I forgot to bookmark it, and I would like to find it. Thanks -Rob

replacement spreaders

I replaced the wood spreaders on my 30 a couple of years ago. I bought the direct replacements from JSI. Send them one of you old spreaders, and they send you a direct replacement. Just drill and install. Nothing to be done inside the mast. Kevin
