Catalina 30 Keel Joint Crack?

Every year I have to fix the seam on my 1977 30 where my keel meets my hull but only about the first foot and a half of it (front). I have wandered around the boat yard and seen the same thing on other Cat 30's. I even had my keel refastened but to no avail. What gives? Is it just a poor design with the keel being swept so far back that the front separates from the weight of the boat? Please help.

Don't worry about it

It seems that almost every C30 that I've ever encountered has this "problem". The thing is, though, it's not really a problem. I've had a couple different surveyors tell me that it's just unique to C30s and that it (usually) is not structural & shouldn't be worried about unless it goes back farther & is gaping. What is actually cracking is just the fairing compound between the hull & the keel. Catalina used (on the older boats) Bondo (I'm serious!) to fair the joint out. That's all that's cracking & it won't hurt anything. You may even see some of the same on the aft end of the keel. If you want to "fix" it for good (hopefully?), sand all the bottom paint off, fill any gaps with high-density fairing compound, wrap the crack with 3-4 layers of 10 oz fiberglass tape, epoxy it up, sand it fair & paint over it & it shouldn't crack again unless you work it really hard. Normal

Its a normal situation dont worry about it. The glass and the steel have diferent flex and expantion rates. Let it be.
