I am interested in purchasing a Catalina 28 (I've owned a 22 and a 30 in the past) and would like to know the differences between the 28 and the Mark II 28. There are not many available for sale in this area of West florida to see and compare and I will have to travel to see a 28, although I can see a Mark II here (costs too much and is pretty new). I can see differences of layouts and other specs, but without having a 28 available to physically see, I wonder if anyone could help me with the differences. Although I would rather have a Mark II, they are more money and I need know if the differences are big enough to matter. I would also like general opinions on the two boats and their differences.

C28 Association

There should be a website www.c28 or www.catalina28.org. A simple www search finds the link below. You can also check the Catalina Yachts website for their brochures for both older and newer C28s. If they don't have the older brochures, the association website should. Stu

I own a 1993 model and would be gald to help with the differences. Stern rail seats, Galley lay out, less teak, lazzerette & cockpit storage, three aft berth portlights, bigger engine. These are just some I can think of right off. I think the 28 has been in constant state of evolution.

Differences

I have a 1991 '28. The I & II's are fairly similar. Here's the main differences I've observed in what you get with the II: -no exterior wood. I has teak rails, steps and other things which require upkeep (having a great time varnishing my teak now!) -slightly better layout in galley. -more portholes -wider cockpit -larger engine (my m320 seems more than adequate here on the west coast with three bladed cruising prop) Here's a link to the newer site for the association.http://clubs.sailnet.com/cat28/ Not a lot of info but I can tell you I really like mine and others that own them seem to feel the same way.
