Hello,

Info on the catalina 28MK11 and the 30 footers. Are these boats ok to standard for racing /crusing? I know you can modify but, for cost reasons is this considered a good starting point. Also wing keel vs Fin? Is there a noticeable difference? Thank you.

Catalina's are very good coastal boats with very loyal owners. I know a lot of people race catalina 30's (not sure about the 28).

The fin keel will point a bit higher then the wing keel which is an advantage in racing. The wing will allow you to get into shallower water when cruising. If cruising you won't see a big difference in performance between the two.

A 17" difference in depth between the wing and the fin doesn't sound like much, but it's huge where I sail on Barnegat Bay. You may want to ask some local sailors about conditions in your area.

I have the wing and she sails beautifully.
