Hello All. The fuel gauge in my 1997 Catalina 270 just stopped working. Does any one have any suggestions on where to look first? I have some electrical experience so any info or lessons learned would be helpful. Thanks very much in advance.

Simple fuel gauge

On my C36 the fuel gauge reads accurate from about full to 7/8 then drops to empty. Some friends with a similar boat spoke of wiring under the tank shorting out on starboard tack with water sloshing about.
I really dont know how much time, energy and money this is worth. The fuel sensor on the tank is in a 1 1/2 inch hole, same as a deck filler plate. My last boat had a dip stick, which was simple and accurate enough. The tank was a trianguar shape, for which I made a graph of known values from fill ups. This tank is a nice rectangle, pretty easy to calculate. Remember KISS principle..
I may just pull the sensor, install a deckplate, keep aware of how much fuel I burn per hour, and when I get close, dip the stick in and measure the depth, which I compare to my graph.

The following troubleshooting guide is from Teleflex Gauges:
The Teleflex fuel gauge and the level sender are designed to operate on 240 ohms (empty) and 33 ohms (full). Most other manufacturers build a marine fuel level system of the same resistance as gauges and senders may be mixed at the boat builder level.
There are only three components to the system-gauge, level sender, and the connecting sender wire. The sender wire should be inspected for breaks in the copper or corroded connection to the terminals.
The fuel gauge can be inspected in the following manner. Turn the ignition on. Remove the sender wire from back of gauge. Pointer must go below the empty mark. Next, connect the gauge sender terminal to ground. The pointer must go above the full mark. If the pointer moves past both E and F, the gauge is functional.
To check the fuel level sender remove wires from sender terminal. Connect volt/ohmmeter to two sender terminals (digital ohmmeter will tend to be jumpy). Ohmmeter should read approximately:
240 ohms @ empty
100 ohms @ 1/2 and
33 ohms @ full.
When the gauge was inoperative on a '94 270 I assumed it was the sending unit, I was happily surprised to find that the gauge had failed, much easier to replace then the sending unit.

Thanks Ted

Ted. Thanks for the info. I can run with this. I will let you know what I come up with.

Ted. Armed with test leads and a multimeter I started on the sender unit which was barely accessible from the aft starboard locker. As soon as I started fiddling with the sender wire the gauge snapped back to life. I could not get it to fail since. I am going to call this one a lucky fix. If the sender ever needs replacement it looks as if I will have to cut a rectangular hole in the deck and install a deckplate. Much easier than trying to remove the tank. Thanks again for your guidance.

Steve, Glad to hear it worked out well, my memory is a little fuzzy but I think I remember that I had to stand on my head to access the sender.
