My wife and I are considering a larger boat the Catalina 27 and the Oday 272 (1989 to 1987). We currently have an Oday 222 and realy like it. However, she heels a lot and my wife would perfer a less heeling boat. Can anyone adivse on the Catalina 27 versus the Oday 272? What to look for on a used Catalina and can anyone recommend a good used Catakina 27 (1989 to 1987) in the New Jersey area for sale. Also, I understand the Catalina we built with "lightly Designed Hull" is this ture and from what years where they built if it is true. Thank You

go for the Catalina 27...

Several years ago, after 2 years of searching, I narrowed it down to a 272, Catalina 27 and Newport 28, all 1986 models. I ended up buying the Newport 28 and it has been a great boat. However, the Catalnia 27 can't be beat for performance, resale value, customer support and bang for the buck. The Odays just did not seem to have the quality the Catalina did and the Catalina will be easy to sell when the time comes. BTW, we bought the Newport 28 because of the extra room, beam, length and it a was a great deal. I got it for about $4,000 less that the C27, because the owners wanted out asap. Good Luck.

catalina vs o'day

I had the same choice last when I purchased my first boat. I choose the Catalina. Heeling is not the favorite of my first mate (wife). I can keep the boat flat (less than 15 degrees) in some pretty strong wind without sacrificing speed. We found that the 110% working jib makes the boat VERY easy to sail and control. Visibility is great. I have had the boat to 40 degrees with small craft advisories out and did not take water over the rails. The boat is very stable. We liked the layout of the C27 over the O'day. There is so much info and available help with owning the Catalina (this site especially). I highly recommend the Catalina. The only thing you may regret is buying the C-30.

Ron, You can go the following link and "crunch" the numbers to compare various sailboats. Have fun. Don http://www.image-ination.com/sailcalc.html

Another C27 vote

While I ewas looking for a C27 or Ericson 27 last year, i cam across a great deal onan O'Day 272 LE. But I was worred about performance in seas (like our Nantucket Sound chop), as the boat is lighter and shallower than the C27. I asked the owner and he said he had a horrible time when it got rough- bounced all over the place. A salesman he was not. I got a 1982 C27 and really love the boat. Handles rougher weather better than its captain- a great weekender. Best of luck.
