I am looking at bying my 1st boat, a 27 catalina (1984) and although the boat itself appears to be in relatively good shape (ie: some cleanup...refinish wood..etc)I am more concerned about a couple of bigger items. One is the 14hp Universal diesel and although it starts and runs ok, I am trying to understand how much it would cost me to rebuild it if it died. Also the mainsail (tall rig) has to be replaced and was wondering how much that might cost me. Any comments would be greatly appreciated...

Probably about $1,000 to $1200 for a brand new

"cruising main", most sailmakers websites will give you a free estimate including on this site. Also available are used sails from various places, Sail Warehouse, Minney's in Costa Mesa, CA, North Sails has an "outlet" on the web that also sells used sails. Couldn't hurt to have a local sail loft look at your sail, they should be able to tell you if it's worth fixing or to bag it. As to the engine, diesels are usually good for a few thousand hours, get a mechanic to do an engine survey for you if really unsure. While diesels are very strong they are also expensive to rebuild.

I believe 1984 was the 1st year of a newer design untill the 270 came out. There should be two opening hatches on either side of the mast. The M-18 is a solid, good running engine that moves the 27 very well. With a clean hull you should make hull speed with 80% of power. Most sailboaters would be envious of the power to weight ratio. You should have a pro check your engine because replacement could be many thousands of dollars. Replacement parts are easy to get. You may also want to have a pro check of out the hull for blisters. A few should be expected. It's easy to get a price on the mailsail, there is an easy to follow guide on this web site, click on the chandlery site for that info. Good luck, jack
