Great boat

C22 was my first "real" boat and served me well. It was a 1982 that I purchased in 2000 and sailed for about 3 years. The only item to look at closely is the winch and cable and bolt for the swing keel. Otherwise ENJOY!

Anchor Down

Yep

A C22 was my first keelboat as well. All things being equal (age, condition, etc.) this is a good choice for the first-time owner. I can't think of a better affordable boat. It has a simple rig, and two adults can step the mast (mine was kept on a trailer for a while). It's forgiving of learner's mistakes. This is a great little daysailor/weekender, and there have been literally thousands built. You might find it informative to find an owner's group online and ask some questions.

Check the keel and the rigging . . .

The Cat 22 is a very good boat in that it does everything fairly well. Your greatest issue will be the mechanical condition. The swing keel should be inspected at the hinge(pivot) point for any looseness, movement, etc. (any movement is a bad thing) Check the cable for fraying and other signs of wear. Check the rudder for splitting. If it is split, then it is a throw-away. Check the rigging for completeness and good condition. If it has a trailer with an extendable tongue, check to see if the tongue extends (they seize up really easily, King Kong would have a tough time getting it apart) The nice thing about the Cat 22 is that you can still buy all the parts.
