Catalina 22 waterline - stern heavy

Does anyone know how much the 22 will "squat" down at the stern when the keel is raised? I know a good portion of weight moves aft with the keel up and I'm wondering just how much it affects the attitude of the boat. I slipped my boat on a canal last year and had to keep the keel up due to the shallow water. The boat sat low in the back and ended up with some slime just above the ablative paint at the back end. The ablative paint at the bow was a little above the water surface. This year I have a deep slip where I can leave the keel down. Do you think having the keel weight all the way forward (down) will get the boat sitting on it's intended waterline? I'm getting ready to strip and repaint the bottom and I'm wondering if I should raise the "waterline" a bit at the aft end. Another thought I had was to add a little ballast in the bow(sand bags or lead) to level the boat out. Has anyone dealt with this issue? What was your experience and how did you compensate? Don't know why, but I never thought to jump in the water out on the lake last year and have someone raise and lower the keel to see the affect on attitude. By the way, I don't have the boat loaded down with gear in the locker, and my engine weighs about 60 pounds. Thanks, Dave 1988 Catalina 22 Swing-Keel #14447

My '88 Does Too

Hello Dave, My boat does the same. I raised the bottom paint about one inch all around the boat. This keeps the slime line below the white gelcoat. I think most sailors keep the keel in the raised position when docked. I do. Few C22 owners would add weight to their boats. Everyone I know is trying like heck to get weight out of their hulls. BTW, my boat is also an '88, #14686. You might like the little bimini I made for him last summer. See it on the related link below. ljp Saint Benedict, #14686 Man....I love that little boat.

Re: My '88 Does Too

Louis, Have you noticed if the keel position makes a difference with the attitude of the boat? In other words, does the stern come up a little when the keel is lowered and it's weight is fully forward? Hopefully, someone who keeps their keel down at the dock will comment. Do you have to keep the keel up because of shallow water? Otherwise, why would you dock it keel up? If the boat rocks at all, it'll wear the pivot. Nice bimini! I've been toying with the idea of adding one to my boat. Maybe later this season. I looked at the upgrades on Scott Sauve's 22 also. That boat is in beautiful condition. I really like the upgrades he as done as well.

I asked the same question . . .

. . . on the Trailer Sailor web site about 6 months ago. Nobody knows the answer, so we will have to collectively find out this spring when we launch. My guess is that the stern will raise about 1 inch with the keel down. The C22 tends to sit in the rear; and moving the battery forward to the v-berth could help. I have moved just about everything else forward. The battery is next. As a slime remedy, I have painted up above the boot stripe in the stern. The paint goes about an inch up on the transom. This keeps the slime and barnicles away.

Re: same question

Thanks Ted. I will check out the discussion on the trailor sailor site. If the stern will raise an inch, that would just about do it for me. However, I will still raise the paint line for the ablative a tad on the aft part of the boat.

I just bought an 89 Cat 22 wing keel. It was kept at a marina in Portland Or. It also has a line accross the stern where the slime discolored above the ablative bottom paint. Could be it's just the boat design sits a little low at the stern. By the way, my boat has dual batteries and they were moved forward to just behind the step (cooler) coming down into the cabin.

RE: ME TOO

Hello dlhoppe, Yes and yes. My boat will sit higher at the stern with the keel down, then the cockpit fills and down it goes. My slip is shallow. I had to pull the rudder today for the first time in two years. North winds the past five days have Bayou Lafourche down about two feet lower than normal. ljp Saint Benedict, #14686 Man....Ilove that little boat.

Main culprit is the engine

Catalina 22 swing keels are beefed up on the forward of the pin to provide some counterbalance to the longer area aft of the pin. So lowering the keel will not greatly raise the stern. The primary reason your vessel sits low is the sixty-pound engine hanging off the stern. While that sixty pounds does not seem like much, in its position on the motor mount, that sixty pounds is greatly leveraged and shoves the stern well down into the water. Put your boat into the water without the engine and see how she lies. The stern will probably just touch the water and you will see how effective the waterline is. The C-22 is a light weight, trailer sail boat. The engine is an accessory and not considered in the original design. It is best to not exceed forty to fifty pounds for the engine as anything more than that will severely drag the stern. In other words, skip horsepower and concentrate on the weight of the outboard on a C-22. I have a sixty-pounder engine too. To offset this excessive stern weight, I move forward into the compartment under the vee berth all heavy things that will fit there such as anchor chain and rodes, certain infrequently used heavy tools, certain heavy spare parts, etc. Other heavy items, such as my tool bag, are stored in the interior starboard seat as far forward as practical. Only light items like my sail cover, throwable seat cushions, etc. are stored in the stern area. When sailing, I store my crib boards into the bow on top of the vee birth to move still yet more weight forward to offset the engine.

Another Thought

Does anyone know how much the rudder for an 88 model boat should weigh? It's the kick-up model. I haven't weighed mine, but I can tell you it's fairly heavy. I'm wondering if it's possibly waterlogged. Anyone have any comments?
