I just bought a 1975 Catalina 22. Three days after putting it in the water and sailing it for a few hours, there was a small amount of water in the bottom of 3 of the storage compartments (an inch or less, no water had come in thur the deck/cabin). Is this normal? Where does the water come from since there were no thru the hull fittings visible when the boat was on the trailer? The previous owner had stored the boat on land, we will keeping it in a slip. Thanks.

leaks

There are two places to look first if you think its getting in while in the water. The bottom gudgeon is the first one I would look at. If the water is is around the winch this is the most likely source of the leak. Remove and reseal. If the water is in the forward holds your source is most likely the keel lock down bolt (it is a swing isn't it) You will find this under the forward settee lean down and look at the side of the keel housing. You can remove the bolt and put heavy grease on it (this usually does the trick) or you can remove the bolt and plug the hole. Hope this gives you a starting place to look.

other leak areas

Besure to check the hose connections where the keel cable goes through the hull and where the cockpit drain goes through the hull. Both are located under the companion way step. David

Check at Bow

My 1975 C22 came second hand to me with a slight separation between deck and hull at point of the bow. When splashed through waves, it took on water which worked back in bilge to battery area. Repaired by using Catalina Direct's kit attaching forestay chainplate to bow eye backing, and sealant. I think this was fairly common with boats the age of ours. Dick
