Scott, it's "6 of one..."

Both are similar production boats, similar quality, etc. Some might say the Catalina is the way to go, as they're still in business, but, really, how much do you reaaly need that must be purchased from the builder, and what are the odds they still carry it?

Look at the condition of each boat, and compare the extras (spare sails, smaller jibs, depth finders, VHF, etc.). Given two similar quality boats, I'd buy the better value, whether that's a lower price, or more bang for the buck, as those options can get pricey fast. If there's a big quality difference, go with the better boat. For a newbie, you'll save time and money in the long run.

I think sums it up pretty well. I just answered so you would know others considered your question.

As mentioned both are similar.

Between Catalinadirect.com and catalinayachts.com you can purchase any part for this boat. This would include from the mast tip to the bottom of the keel/centerboard.
Catalina 22s probably have one of the largest users groups of any sailboat with over 15,000 built. I have a 1988 Catalina 34 and I still rely on the Catalina factory for replacement parts that include lifeline, standing rigging, deck hardware ports rudder and topping lift

Again both boats are similar, check them both out again and again.

As you can tell, I think the Catalina user community is priceless regardless of model.

Get out on the water and enjoy.

Any chance that you can sail one of each? Cup gives good advice. But on the water they could be quite different. I owned and raced a C-22 for a couple of years. I did not like the boat, much harder to sail then my H37C. I think the mainsheet arrangement was my biggest gripe. I tried some mods that did not help much. And the interior was much less comfortable and usable than a friend's H22 for example. I have no experience with the O'Day.

The O'Day has a shoal keel (I think most had a centerboard in the shoal keel). Most Cats have a fully swinging keel. You can launch a full swing keel boat in shallower water -- could be a plus if you plan on trailering a lot.
Both would be very good beginner boats, like others have said, I'd let the condition, extras and selling prices be the discriminator. Look at stuff like the engines (two stroke versus four stroke), sails (do either have roller furling?), bimini (must have in warm climates) and electronics (does it include VHF, stereo system, knotmeter, depth meter, etc.) Those extras can add up to one boat being a much better value than another. You don't want to put all of that stuff on the boat after you buy it, because you probably won't get that $$ back. And chances are after you get a season or two and the 'bug' really bites, you'll probably want a bigger boat anyway.
Some of the Cat 22s had pop tops, which gives you more headroom if you are planning on staying on the boat overnight. O'Day compensated by having a very large sliding hatch (at least on the 23 and 26). Will you be staying on the boat a lot? Are you tall or short, haha?
I have had a few O'Days (23, 26, 272) and think they have a generally good fit and finish and seem a little more substantial than comparable Cats. (NOTE so I don't offend anyone -- not trying to bash Catalinas and I have not done an all inclusive comparison, this is just my opinion in the boats I have seen, most of which are 20+ years old!) Some of the older Cats have plywood with plastic woodgrain veneer inside, whereas the O'Days used ply with teak veneer. I didn't like the woodgrain plastic.
I loved my O'Day 23 (1979) and would highly recommend one of those as a beginner boat if either of the ones you are looking at don't work out.

I don't know if this will help, but you might want to look at these Catalina's to see if the asking price is in line.....

http://www.sailingtexas.com/cboats99catalina22.html

Here are some O'Days.....

http://www.sailingtexas.com/cboats99oday22.html

We almost bought a small sailboat here in town a year ago not knowing what a fair price was. It was $2000 with a trailer and I thought it was a good deal. After finding the sailingtexas site I found out that it probably should of been selling for $900.

We found our boat by using the following search engine. Here are searches....for Cats.....

http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.c...oc=&fil=&ys=&ye=&ps=&pe=&pgs=50&submit=++++go++++

........and O'days or any other boat for that matter and .............

http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.c...oc=&fil=&ys=&ye=&ps=&pe=&pgs=50&submit=++++go++++

............... you can regionalism the searches for Craigs list nationwide and found our Mac in Arizona. You might also look at the MacGregor/Ventures in that size. They also have a very good Internet network.

Good Luck,

Evaluating Your First Boat Options

I'll definately agree with the others who have suggested comparing the boats and seeing which is the better overall value. Boats cost way, way more as pieces than they are worth as complete boats so definately consider which has all the goodies that would be of interest to you.
You didn't mention any interest or lack there of in racing. There is a very active C-22 racing scene in almost every part of the US, not so much for the Oday. If you have any interest in racing that would definately put a + in the C-22 column.
Boat trailers can be expensive. They only breakdown Sunday night after a long weekend on the water, after dark when it is raining and you are in the middle of nowhere. If you are going to do much trailering, definately consider the condition of the trailer in your purchase.
Finally, as was mentioned above, you need to sail any boat before you purchase. Afterall, that why you are buying the boat, you want to go sailing. Different boats sail differently. Take your time, sail several different boats in your price range until you decide on the model of boat you like then work on finding several of that model to evaluate.
I've had 3 sailboats of increasing size the first two of which were trailered extensively.
Happy shopping and have fun!

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
How about some pictures of the new girl!?!?!?! One other thing that other people failed to mention is to ask where you plan on sailing the boat and what type of sailing you intend to do.

Either way, you have the boat now and you are well on your way to having good times. I use to use the winter to do projects on my boat when I had a Hunter22. I spent one winter re-doing the wood inside of the boat (used a space heater to keep the cabin warm and dry while I did this). It looked really good when I was done.

Good luck and congradulations!

Congradulations - I had a 1981 222 for about 15 years, and with maintenance and a few upgrades it looked as good as new when I sold it. Keep and eye out for the chainplates - in the O'Day's (at least the 222 vs 22) they tended to be lighter that should have been - and easy upgrade.

I had trouble keeping it centered as I pulled it up on the trailer due to the centerboard trunk. After about 12 of the 15 years I built a cheap, easy cenetering guide for it. You will love it - I lived on it on the weekends in Texas

minus 16 degrees celcius?!??

Jeez, i multiply x 5/9's, wait multiply by 9/5's, add 32, but it's minus, so I do subtract 32, oh crap. I don't where you live, but it sounds like the arctic circle.

Here in Florida, when we talk about hard water, we mean it has minerals in it...

Enjoy your boat. I still have my Oday22, and it's always fun for a daysail. I have a tiller pilot, so once we get out in open water, we let Otto drive whilst we enjoy adult beverages ( hope you notice I wrote "whilst"- I guessing you speak canadian;). The Oday is a very good boat, and if it's aa clean as you say, you'll enjoy it.

Remember the name "RUDY". He's the best source for Oday parts. Check the archives with his name, you'll be glad.
