Looking for my first trailer sailer and I have a question. When looking at pictures of the Mac 25 vrs the Cataline 22 (both swing keels)sitting on trailers, it looks like the Mac would require less water depth to launch/load the boat on the trailer then the Catalina 22 . Is this the case? It looks like the Mac must have the keal trunk on the inside of the boat where the Cataline is under the boat? What I see in the pictures is the Mac seems to sit about 8" lower on the trailer then the Catalinas do, is this true? Thanks

The only sure way to tell . . .

. . . is to take a measurement of the actual boats in their trailers. I have a Catalina 22 and as I recall there is about 28-30" to the boot stripe whan it sits on the trailer (in the vicinity of the axle). The boat has to be in about 30" of water to launch it.

You got it

The Mac keel trunk is inside, which makes the boat extremely low on the trailer, able to float in shallow places, beach and launch. The downside is that it occupies space in the center of the saloon. Catalina is unobstructed inside, but less amphibious. The outside keel trunk would give more directional stability under way. It may also take some of the weight off the swingkeel if the trunk is ballasted, but I am not sure if thats the case (a Cat owner will let us know.)
