I'm thinking of buying a Catalina 22 that doesn't come with a trailer! Do I have to buy a trailer that is specifically for Catalina 22, or will any boat trailer do? This is a 1977 Catalina 22 swing keel. Also, how much should a trailer for this boat cost? How hard is it to rig and de-rig the boat? I currently own a Hunter 35, but I've never had a trailerable sailboat before!

trailer

hello jason, trailers are few and very far between, you won't even be able to find a trailer to borrow. locate someone in your area and see if you can get some measurements and photos of the trailer. you will pay a minimum of $1000.00 for one try to locate a trailer dealer in your area and talk to them about what you need, and get an idea of cost for a custom trailer. try NOT to buy a boat that does not include a trailer. good luck john

power boat trailer

You can always find a power boat trailer and convert. Just make sure you get a trailer where the axle can be adjusted. A couple of U bolts and some metal box beams or channels would get you going.

i've been told...

that for a swing keel boat, you should have something on the trailer to support the keel while trailering. i dont believe it would be a major deal to have something welded on if you didnt have one to begin with. I was lucky to find a boat and trailer package when i bought mine. As far as raising the mast.. well I've done it in the driveway so far.. hopefully I'll get to try it again,at the waters edge, soon as i finish my projects on it. it sure doesnt seem to stop people from buying trailer sailors, as i've been talkin to a whole bunch of em, askin questions and tips for the boat.

Funny you should ask...

Jason, I have a '79 Cat 22 swing keel with the original trailer. It was specifically built for the Cat 22 - it has the appropriate bed built for the curve of the hull, and guides to ensure that the keel ends up center mass as the boat is recovered. It was in functional condition when I bought it. But it in no way inspired great confidence. I made the needed fixes to make it road worthy, but still faced the real decision of - grind/sand, fix, prime, and repaint - or buy a new one. As Trail-Rite made the trailer I called them first. They have the ready ability to make a new trailer for your 1972 swing keel Cat 22. You cannot get it through the company, but you can through any boat dealer that works with Trail-Rite - the catch is the price tag. I want to say (it has been a year or so) that they wanted $5000 for a new trailer. In a way, that does not seem unreasonable; on the other hand, I paid $3000 for the boat/trailer combination in the first place. The real decision comes from what do you want to do with your boat? My trailer meets my current needs - winter storage, haul in and haul out. But if you want to do the "true" trailer sailor thing - and start taking extended journeys, then I think it is prudent to have a good, mechanically sound, trailer specifically designed for your boat. Hope this helps. SJK SENDS

cheaper trailer

I'm in the same situation as you Scott. My boat did come with a trailer but it's a mess. As I store my boat only 50' from the ramp I don't have concerns of towing on the highway but I am starting to get a little worried of it's rapidly deteriorating conditon. Which led me to call around locally and I found out I can get a galvanized trailor ready for the road for $1700.00. Sure would be nice to bring her home for the winter but I can scrape alot of paint and clean-up the old one for alot less. Knowing myself as I do, I probably just wait for it to fall apart and then deal with it then.
