I'm about ready to launch my (new to me) Catalina 22 for the first time. Will a few of you Chesapeake sailors let me know what you consider the top 3 launch locations for a 22 on the Bay in the Baltimore/Annapolis area? Top 3 for a person new to the boat, that is. Thank you, Joe McManus

Chesapeake Boat Ramps

Joe: I can recommend two ramps one is in Baltimore City and is located at the Canton Waterfront Park on Boston St. It is a City owned park and is FREE. It is also safe since the Baltimore City Police Marine Unit is located there and manned round the clock. This is also the closest ramp to the Inner Harbor, and is where I launched my boat the first year I owned it. The second ramp is at Maryland Marina located on Red Rose Farm Road in the Middle River area and has two ramps side by side. This is primarilly a sailboat marina and the ramps are excellent for launching the Catalina 22. I keep my C22 here on a trailer and use the ramps all the time. The ramp on the east side is the better of the two. Barry Broyles C22 # 1909 "Brighteyes"

We Use the Ramp at MD Marina too

Joe: We use the ramp at Maryland Marina too. Barry said that he likes the east ramp. I don't know which one that is, but we use the one on the right as you look down the ramp. I suppose that it would be possible to drive into the water too deep, so be careful, but we never really had a problem with that. (We don't keep our boat at Maryland Marina, but have launched it there for years. They have always been very nice to us there. They used to be a Catalina dealer, and still sell parts for Catalinas). Is your boat a swing keel C-22? If so, I have previously answered questions about a guide that I made out of PVC pipe to help guide the keel back onto the trailer, so that the keel lines up with the rubber "V" that supports the keel while it is being trailered. If this seems applicable to you, send me a message at aadjcamacci@panetwork.com, and I will send you the photos. I got several requests for them last time someone asked a question about getting the boat back on the trailer. Also, there is a marina just north of the Bay Bridge, on the western shore, that has ramps that are unbelievable. I used it about 20 years ago. I think that it was called Sandy Point State Park, at that time, but I don't know if it is still a park or a private marina now. If you are looking for the ultimate ramp, you might want to check that out too. It sounds like it is near the area that you want to sail in. Middle River is a nice place to keep your boat, and now has several nice restaurants that you can sail right up to. Also, it's a good place from which you can cross the bay to Worton Creek, or Fairlee Creek. Maybe we will get to sail with you sometime. Aldo

Thank You

Thank you for the help on the launch locations. I'll try the Maryland Marina site when things settle down a bit. If I see you there, I will stop and say hello. Regards, Joe McManus S/V Curragh
