I've been doing work on my 1971 Catalina 22 re-sealing all the deck hardware to prevent/fix leaks that I've found. I would like to replace the teak hatch rails that the main hatch slides on. One of the rails has a crack that had been repaired by a previous owner, and they are generally kind of worn out also. Catalina direct sells them for about $98, they don't seem to have the plastic ones for my boat, so I'll have to go with wood. I hear that CD is kind of slow at shipping these since they have to make them first? I was wondering if anyone out there has simply made their own with a router, table saw, and a couple strips of wood? Any ideas, or should I just put in my order and wait a couple months? I do have access to a friend or two that are handy with a table saw! Tom

You Bet!

I made mine out of some scrap wood. Some kind of hardwood like Ipe I believe. I used the old one to make a pattern then took a hole saw, table saw and router.

seaboard

I was just thinking of that! I might be able to do do something creative with some strips of Seaboard if I can't find any teak or Ipe that would work. I've used that stuff before to get my gas can out of the cabin and put in the back of the cockpit. Kinda neat stuff to work with! Tom

Teak Rails

Hi Tom, My Catalina is a 79 and the wooden slide rails were in rough shape. A friend had a few lengths of teak left over from a project and I used them on my table saw to duplicate the original rails as well as the frames around the cabin hatchway. They made the boat look so much better; I am very happy with the outcome. If teak is not available mahogany will look as well and can be finished with one of the new varnishes that are very long lasting. Mahogany is available at many lumber yards (at least in this area). Good Luck, Robert

Plastic rails

I checked on catalinaDirect.com and found that they didn't have the plastic rails for my boat. The one I need is about 56.5 inches long. They said on the site that they only have teak. I've read that they are VERY slow about sending rails like this. I guess they have to grow the tree first? :) Anyway, I'd like to find some teak (or maybe Ipe wood - suggested on another forum) and just cut my own. That shouldn't be too hard and probably 1/2 the cost, and a lot less time. Tom

Plastic

Reading the Catalina direct site, it seems I might even be able to use some of the shorter plastic rails (since the 56.5 inch rails my boat uses don't come in plastic) but the hatch would hang over a little bit when opened. I usually don't slide it open the entire way, so maybe that would work? Anyone know how long CD takes to ship plastic rails? I hear they are kind of pokey when it comes to sending the wood parts. Took almost 2 weeks when I ordered my keel winch parts, that seemed almost excessive when I was ready to work on it! Tom
