I would like to inspect the keel hinges and pin on my 1985 C-22, but do not have the equipment or facility to completely drop the keel. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to lower the keel enough to remove the hinges and pin for inspection and replace if necessary ?

Floor Jack

Hi There, I don't know what hinges you are talking about but on my 22' Cat it's 4 stainless steel bolts and a pin. thats it. Nothing more. A floor jack that you can fit or fashion a cradle out of 2x6 and 2x4s to form a " U " shape just wide enough for the keel to rest in on top of the jack pedestal for support should do the job. Catalina direct sells the video and kit for replacing pin and adding spacers and new bolts as well if you are interested. Hope this helps. Happy Sailing Dave :)

hello ed, you will need more than one jack. on my 22 the cable end of the keel touches the underside of the hull ( i need to fix that ) so with a jack under the hinge end it wouldn't be able to teeter-totter to lower the hinge end so i would need to lift the aft end of the boat befor i could lower the hinge end. when i removed my keel, one of the mounting bolts snaped off and i had to drill out the broken bolt and re-thread for a heli-coil insert.if you need to remove the keel you will need to lift the boat allmost two feet off the bunks to clear the hulls' underside the keel is 500 lbs. or more. get the video from catalina direct good luck john
