I plan to go look at a Catalina 22 tomorrow for a possible purchase. the current owner said he thinks its a 76 or 77, but didn't have the paperwork handy when I called about it. in my pre-inspection research I see the lower shrouds would all be 1/8" on the heavy mast boats, and the spreader would be SS instead of aluminum. the spreader should be a good clue, but are there other easy ways to identify the two mast types?

Thanks,
Russ

Russ,

All Catalina-22's have 1/8" standing rigging. There were some of the early boats that had lighter forward and rear lower stays, but I'm sure those have, or should've been replaced many years ago. No Catalina-22 came with SS spreaders. The early boats had cast aluminum spreader sockets attached to the mast, but again, those probably were replaced by the stainless steel spreader sockets, all the spreaders have been aluminum tubing. The old aluminum spreader sockets were prone to cracking, and Catalina Direct has the upgraded ones, so don't base your decision on that, it's an easy fix. The original lighter masts that the racers like are more of an egg or tear drop shape. The newer masts were oval with flat sides, both the front and the rear of the mast are the same diameter. The older lighter masts allow the racers to bend the mast to flatten the main. Nobody stresses the C-22's like the racing crowd, and the lighter masts hold up well, and are in big demand. On a boat of that vintage your big concern would be wet, or rotten coring. Unlike many boats in the C-22 size, the deck is made up of an interior liner and the outside deck. Plywood coring was sandwiched between in high load areas. Boats that have been neglected, and, or not properly maintained, can develop leaks where the plywood coring becomes wet, which leads to rotting. Again, not the end of the world, but it all depends on how handy you are, and what the boat sells for. But one thing for sure, remember, it's always cheaper in the long run to buy a well maintained boat, than a neglected boat. Walk around on the deck, a grown man will not flex the decks when walking on them. Take a small hammer and tap the decks. Bad areas will sound hollow or dull. But that's just a WAG method, but a fairly good indication. The C-22 leak points are the mast step, chain plates, and bow fitting. Also look for water staining on the wood bulkheads in the cabin. In my opinion, If you look in the bilge and see mold accumulation, or a waterline, chances are the hull was filled with water for a period of time, leave and find another boat.

Good luck, they're GREAT boats, just like anything, you gotta take care of them. I enjoy two of them, and I've had 5 C-22's over the years.

Thanks Don,
What I read was that a slew of masts broke, mostly when racing, after the bigger genoa came along for the 22s in the early/mid 70s, which prompted the upgraded mast setup. and you know if it's on the internet it has to be true ;) . at any rate, I'd like to know what the boat has when I look at it tomorrow. this one is a higher priced boat than I've been looking at up til now, so I will expect it to be in much better condition also, but we'll see. thanks for the tips.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out, and don't be afraid to walk away. I've done it several times, and my wife thinks I should've done it more times.

My recollection is that the light duty mast has an oval cross section and the heavy duty made is more oblong cross section. My 1981 C22 had the heavy duty mast & rigging. I am not sure when they made the production switch.

I/we have driven a total of about 1400 miles in just the past two weeks, looking at various sailboats, without a purchase yet. another 250 miles round trip today would be a piece of cake to walk away from :) . I've raised my budget for this purchase, so maybe that will improve the odds however ;) .

Thanks,

Russ,

What hated the most was people misrepresenting the boats in their ads. I drove up to L.A. to look at what appeared to be a nice new design C-22. The photos were nice with the boat sitting in a slip. By the time I saw the boat it had been sitting in a yard for several years, very filthy, running rigging dry rotted away, motor was never put away properly, and the tires flat. They were insulted when I told them I wouldn't take it if they gave it away! My first C-22 I picked up in Michigan, north of Detroit, and towed it home to Kansas City.

I hear that Don. The one we just looked at up in Salem was said to be a "needs nothing" boat. the rigging was mostly cotton and cheep poly rope from Wally World. interior soaked and full of leaves on the cushions, crappy cobbled together trailer, etc. Not sure who they think they're gona fool with that stuff, but it IS an aggravating waste of time. It's all part of the adventure I guess. Cars were the same way for me, so I've somewhat gotten used to it and chock it up to education and adventure. Jennifer loves to travel so it works out I guess. ;)

Leaving in an hour for our next adventure,
Russ

We looked at the Cat 22 yesterday. it's a 76 and has the early egg-shaped mast with cast spreader supports. it was in better condition than other craft we've looked at, but not enough better to justify the 4K asking price IMHO. We did like the roomier cabin and v-berth, so if another C22 comes along I'd sure concider it.

the search continues,
Russ

Russ, if you don't intend to race seriously, consider a "new design" C-22. They were manufactured between 1986 to 1994. Many of the issues with the original C-22 were corrected, and if you thought the V-berth was nice on a 1974 boat, you won't believe the V-berth with a HUGE opening hatch above you on the front of the taller cabin. On the newer models, the hatch has smoked glass to look out and lets more light into the cabin. The whole boat was updated in comparison to the original version. We have a MK-II, and my project boat is a 1988 "new design", and although we LOVE our MK-II, in my opinion, the new design versions are the prettiest C-22 of them all.
