I am about to purchase a 1980 Catalina 22 with a swing keel. It has been moored in salt water, I believe, for several years. In reviewing the literature, it is noted in more than one place that this boat was not intended to be moored in salt water. Any experience or suggestions? Am I about to buy a problem?

no problems so far

Hello, My boat is 1981. It has spent at least the last ten years being moored in salt water. It would go in the water in the spring, and come out in the fall. I bought it last July and it is in very good condition. Like anything else, you need to maintain it. Would this be my first choice for a boat that was going to be moored year round? No, but considering the costs involved with hauling and launching larger boats, it is a great trade off. Barry

Whats the guy ur buyin it from say??

with a swing keel you just need to do a little more maintenance on the keel than probably most. like the keel pin pivot bolt. then if you need to get at the swing keel cable.. it has to come out of the water to work on that..but then it'll have to come out to do regular maint anyways. thought of a fixed keel..??a swing keel wouldnt be my first choice if it were going to be kept in the water..but then who am i... my two cents worth.. good luck..

Seller's words...

The guy I bought it from owned it for less than a month and isn't familiar with the issue. The prior owner says he had it in the water for four years and eventually had to replace the keel raising cable and winch. He also says he knows it was in the water for six years prior. I think you are right -- just need to keep an eye on it. Regarding fixed keel -- would be nice, but this one came along with a slip in a terrific marina that normally has a three year wait list. There are two other Catalina 22s in the marina that seem to be doing OK. Thanks...
