Fixed, wing or swing keel? Which boat has better sailing performance? Looking to buy a C22, any advice is much appreciated. PS - any pics of a good bimini setup on a 22?

Fixed performs better, but I wanted a swing keel to allow for trailering, dock, beach access, and cruising in shallower waters. I love the swing keel flexibility. Because it has moving parts you need to be alert to maintenance and condition, but I would not change to a fixed in my situation.

I agree on the swing keel.

I leave my 1980 C22 on the trailer with the mast up and fully rigged. We launch and retreive the boat each time we go out and that is 4 times a week on average. I truly can launch and load the boat, by myself, in 10 minutes each way. I only tow the boat 100 yards from where I store it and without the swing keel and its lower stance on the trailer I couldn't do it with my truck. I have a Toyota Tacoma 2wd and mid size car and both work well with the Catalina trailer. The wing keel sits higher on the trailer and would require a much longer trailer tongue extension or a 4wd truck. Ray

Swing keel

is probably the best way to go if you trailer or if you go in the shallows. It has a draft with the board up of 2' and down at 5'. I have ground out a few times now in two years and winching up the keel works wonders to move off the shallow spot. The wing is 100 lbs more ballast than the swing keel with a draft of 2' 6" -I believe. and points probably not as good as the other two. But it is a nice compromise for sailing in the shallows with less maintenance that the swing keel mechanism. Would not be so bad for trailering since it's 6" taller than the swing keel when on the trailer. The fin keel draft is 3'6" and has 800lbs of ballast. It should point the best of the lot but it does weigh more and the fin actually isn't as deep as the swing keel version. I am guessing but I think that the swing keel puts more weight lower below the boat. It would be difficult to say which type sails better. The theoretical Hull Speed of all boats is 5.89 knots but this is only a factor of the waterline hull length.
