After living and working in dry Arizona for many years we are back in the northwest and getting quotes on a new Catalina 22 MK II - so we will have many questions. I would like to buy a used engine since I am putting out money for a new boat. Questions: do I need a short or long shaft. 2) What horsepower - we have a 5 knot current in the Columbia river at times. Thanks Rik & Konnie

I had a Hunter 22 fixed keel with a Honda 5 . .
And it had plenty of power. The Hunter weighed ~ 3200 lb which I believe is a little heftier than the C22. As to shaft length, you should look for at least a long shaft. The need for an XL shaft will depend in part on the motor bracket - does it put the motor low in the water, etc. You might want to consider a new 6hp from Tohatsu/Nissan. They are about $1500 w/ the extra goodies and a good warranty. Good Luck!
