I am considering purchasing a catalina 34 mk2. i use the boat for sailing in southern cal. from san miguel island down to encinada. I am looking for opionions on whether the boat is strong enough for this type of sailing. san migue can get 30-35 kt winds. Does anyone have experience with this boat in limited offshore use. thanks

Sounds like a good sail

30 knots - what a great sail! Seriously, coastal sailing is what Catalinas were built for. Go for it! LaDonna

Catalina 34 is fine for coastal and ltd offshore

First, do you belong to the C34 Owners Association (www.c34.org)? If not, you should, since it's a great source of info, and there's an active fleet in SoCal. We have a 1997 C34 Mk II that we sail here in San Francisco Bay, and we've taken her to Half Moon Bay a few times; no problems, even in 8-10 foot seas. We plan a longer trip (out to the Farallone Islands, then down to Santa Cruz or Monterey) this spring or summer.
