I am attaching a picture of the damage to the keel of a 1977 Cat27. I was hoping someone could comment on the seriousness of this damage. Thanks! I have more pics if someone wants a closer look.

This IS Serious

I thought that the Catalina 27 had a suspended cast lead keel - but, from the photo, yours appears to be an encapsulated keel (internal ballast). The crack seems to be far enough down, that it’s not the hull-keel joint, but the keel itself that’s cracked. Please confirm or correct, and/or add more photos. In any case, your keel definitely need attention! See the recent threads on: Keel Repair...need everyone's help - By Mike & etc. and Barrier Coat a Steel Keel- By Paul& etc. Regards, Gord

Probably not a problem

I believe Cat 27 keels are solid lead, with a thin epoxy/fiberglass coating applied over them for fairing purposes. My guess is that the fairing coat cracked, some water got under it, and then bubbled it. Just chip some away, take a look; I'll bet that it's no big deal. If, however, the lead keel itself is cracked, then all bets are off!
