This past weekend I noticed the emergency tiller head on my 1987 cat 30 was cracked and badly corroded and needs to be replaced asap. So now I have a couple of questions. Why did this happen? If I remove the old emergency tiller head will the rudder drop out of the boat? Any leads on where to get a replacement part? I check with Catalina direct and the part is currently on back order. I launch on the 29th so I need a solution asap. Thanks in advance

It should not drop
If you look below deck you will see the quadrant (large pulley) will hold the rudder shaft from dropping through. I have no idea why your tiller head would crack, mine looks like its plated brass. I would imagine you could call Catalina and get a replacement. Remove & replace should be a straight foward job.

Rudder Rust?
This spring rusty water has been oozing from a small crack midway down the rudder of my C30. I can see where water has been entering and I can epoxy it closed once the water has drained. The rudder post appears to be stainless. Are there ferous medal parts inside that could cause rusty water to form?
